On May 16th, a STEM Breakfast will be held to bring together principals, building administrators and other professionals who observe K-12 STEM teaching.  The program will include an overview of the “Next Generation Science” classroom, explaining how science teaching and learning has shifted under the new standards, customized for those who may have limited background on the NGSS.  Hands-on workshops will allow participants to experience the new standards as adult learners and reflect on how their teachers are changing their practice to align with this student-centered approach to teaching.

NJ State Science Coordinator, Michael Heinz, and colleagues from the Montclair State University and Rider University STEM education community will reflect on the challenges of implementation of the NJ Science Learning Standards and what success looks like in the classroom.

PRISM at Montclair State University and SELECT at Rider University will host this event, which will include:

  • A presentation by NJ-DOE State Science Coordinator, Michael Heinz, including a general update and review the Science Instruction Companion to the Danielson Framework.
  • Small group and whole group activities to model STEM classroom observation and evaluation.  Emphasis will be in the "look-fors" of classroom scenarios.
  • A packet of resource materials for use in-district.
  • Breakfast and table-group networking.

The program will include full breakfast, on-going refreshments, free parking, and sample materials relevant to the observation and evaluation of STEM teaching. A generous grant from Bristol-Myers Squibb will support the majority of the program cost, reducing the registration fee to $40.

District teams are encouraged to attend.  Register soon: space is limited.
