Elementary School Certification with Subject Matter Specialization: Mathematics Grades 5-8 (Online)

Teacher Certification

A teacher in a classroom works with a group of middle-school students

This post-baccalaureate program equips you to teach mathematics to students in grades 5–8 and earn the New Jersey Middle School with Subject Matter Specialization: Mathematics certification. It’s designed for candidates who already hold a CEAS or standard New Jersey certification in another area, such as Elementary K–6 or a P–12 secondary subject.

Through a sequence of five courses, you’ll strengthen your mathematics content knowledge and learn how to design engaging, effective lessons that meet New Jersey’s mathematics standards. Coursework covers topics such as algebra, geometry, and mathematical connections across disciplines, as well as teaching strategies tailored to middle school learners. You’ll also gain skills to foster curiosity, confidence, and deeper understanding of math in your students.

After completing all program and state requirements, you’ll be eligible for certification to teach mathematics in grades 5–8 in New Jersey public schools. Graduates also have the option to continue toward the Master’s in Mathematics Education, further expanding their expertise and leadership skills in the classroom and beyond. See the curriculum.
