Whether you’re already teaching or planning to teach in the middle grades, the fully online Certificate in Teaching Middle School Mathematics will deepen your content knowledge and sharpen your instructional skills. This five-course program aligns with New Jersey’s mathematics standards and equips you to confidently teach today’s recommended curriculum.

You’ll explore the core principles of school mathematics while learning how to connect those concepts across subjects and real-world contexts. Designed for teachers from a variety of disciplines—including science, business, and computer science—the program helps you become a more effective and enthusiastic educator, able to foster deeper understanding and appreciation of math in your students.

If you decide to continue your studies, the credits you earn may be applied toward the Online Master’s in Mathematics Education which supports experienced and aspiring teachers who want to expand their knowledge and take on leadership roles in classrooms, districts, or beyond.

Which Certificate Program is Right for You?

The program is designed for current or future teachers who are interested in teaching mathematics in the middle grades. Teaching Middle Grades Mathematics Certificate does not provide initial teaching certification or secondary teaching endorsement. If you are a certified teacher and wish to obtain a secondary endorsement to teach middle grades mathematics, the Certification in Elementary School with Subject Matter Specialization: Mathematics Grades 5-8 is the right program for you.

Admission Requirements

  • Equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
  • Applicants with non-U.S. degrees: Please visit the international applicants page to review U.S. degree equivalency information.
  • *Students seeking an F1/J1 visa are not eligible for this certificate program unless they are currently pursuing a master’s degree at Montclair State University and are able to simultaneously pursue both programs while maintaining their student visa requirements.

Application Checklist

  • Application Deadline: Rolling admission.
  • Online Application: Submit application and $60 non-refundable fee (or waiver if applicable).
  • Transcript: One from each college attended.
  • Essays/Statement of Purpose: Please write an integrated essay providing a response to each of the following questions:
    • What are your goals for graduate study and your future career?
    • In what ways do your academic background and your professional experiences provide evidence of your potential for success in the program you selected and in your eventual career? Please give specific examples of relevant coursework and/or experience.
    • Is there any further information we should consider in assessing your candidacy?
  • Letters of Recommendation: One.
  • Teacher Certification: Copy of New Jersey teacher’s certificate. (Optional)
