DON’T THROW AWAY THE KEY: CHANGING PERSPECTIVES ON JUVENILE LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE

Juvenile Life without Parole (LWOP) as an issue has been at the forefront of criminal justice reform starting with two Supreme Court cases in 2012 and 2016 that eliminated mandatory LWOP for juveniles. Following these rulings 23 states have passed legislation completely eliminating this sentence, and others are grappling with the process.

In this round-table discussion we will address issues surrounding lengthy sentences for youth, the research supporting opportunities for release, and advocacy movements to eliminate life and “virtual-life” sentences for young people.
