Gearity wins second NCAA outdoor track national title

It was only fitting that the finest season in Montclair State athletics history ended with Heather Gearity capturing her second-straight National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Championship title, winning the 400-meter hurdles in LaCrosse, Wis., in May.

Gearity, a senior biology major, set a track record in the event at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse’s Roger Harring Stadium with a time of 59.31 seconds, posting the fourth-fastest time in Division III championship history.

After winning the 2012 championship title, she says, she was excited but also “a little nervous” knowing how hard it would be to do a second time.

“Winning last year was incredible,” Gearity says. “But to do it again this year is just an amazing feeling.” Gearity said after her victory.
