Singled out for showing “great improvement in granting degrees to and enrolling Hispanic students,” Montclair State University is featured on the cover and in the cover story of Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine’s annual “Top 100 Colleges for Hispanics” issue, which came out on May 18, 2015.

Each year, Hispanic Outlook reviews the previous year’s student enrollment and degree completion statistics to determine which colleges and universities around the nation are training the most Hispanic scholars. Montclair State has been included in the Top 100 for over 15 years and is praised by the publication for continuing to build on its diversity successes.

“Our high regard for this university dates back to 1997 when our publisher José Lopez Isa selected [Montclair State] as one of his Publisher’s Picks,” author Mary Ann Cooper writes in the cover story. “In 2002 [Montclair State] was a Publisher’s Pick for the 6th consecutive year, labeling [the university] as one of the schools ‘that we believe enable so many of our Hispanic youth to succeed.’”

The University has been steadily climbing within the Top 100. In 2013, Montclair State was ranked No. 85 in the nation for the total number of bachelor’s degrees granted to Hispanic students. Its ranking in the same category rose to No. 76 in 2014 and in the latest release, Montclair State jumped to No. 51 in the nation and No. 2 in New Jersey.

Hispanic Outlook notes that Montclair State’s growth is not just in the undergraduate arena but overall: “In just the past two years they have increased their graduate enrollment among Hispanics by almost 15 percent, while consistently improving their undergraduate Hispanic degrees granted and total enrollment.”

Not surprisingly, the Top 100 list is heavy with institutions located in states that have large Hispanic populations – such as California, Texas, New Mexico and Florida – but Montclair State is continuing to do its part to keep New Jersey on the list and to advance diversity in the state. “As we predicted in 2002,” the article says, “[Montclair State’s] achievements in diversity ‘will doubtless ripple down through succeeding generations.’”
