Sophomore Lia Negra is an All-American. That came after she finished in eighth place in the javelin at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 28 at Wartburg College’s Walston Hoover Stadium in Waverly, Iowa.

Negra posted a personal-best mark of 41.21 meters (138-feet, 6-inches). She became the first Montclair State athlete to earn All-American honors in the event since Jean Wohlgemuth in 1985 and she is the first outdoor female field All-American since Monqiue Riddick in 2009.

Negra entered the meet ranked 11th in the nation at 42.00 meters. She posted that personal-best on Monday at the Swarthmore Last Chance Qualifier. Negra is enjoying an outstanding season in which she was named the NJAC Field Athlete of the Week twice and was named First-Team All-NJAC.

Negra began the outdoor season with a fifth-place finish at the Monmouth Season Opener posting a distance of 39.53 meters. She registered the first of her four individual event wins the following week at the Roadrunner Invitational, topping the 40-meter mark at 40.30. She repeated her victory at the TCNJ Invitational on April 10 and then placed fourth at East Stroudsburg’s All-America Meet.

Negra captured first place at the Brick City Classic before claiming the NJAC championship in the javelin at the league meet on May 8 at Stockton University. Negra registered a distance of 41.92 meters, which vaulted her into the Top 10 in Division III.
