In its first-ever survey, College Consensus has ranked Montclair State as one of the nation’s top “25 LGBTQ Friendly Colleges of 2019.”

The national accolade places the University among other prestigious institutions such as Princeton University, Tufts University, the University of Pennsylvania, Ohio State University, Rutgers University and Lehigh University that share a commitment to making their campuses safe and ideal learning environments for all students.

“We are proud to be included in the College Consensus Top 25 LGBTQ ranking of colleges and universities. Montclair State has a long history and tradition of providing equity and quality in all of its programs and services,” says Montclair State Vice President for Student Development and Campus Life Karen L. Pennington. “We welcome everyone as a member of our community and strive to provide a comforting and supportive environment to all.”

The College Consensus listing specifically recognizes the University’s LGBTQ Center, which through leadership development, education, advocacy and support services fosters a campus environment that is inclusive and supportive of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

LGBTQ Center resources also include a Safe Space program and numerous topical discussion groups. Students can join Theta Delta Sigma, a new LGBTQ-focused, gender inclusive Greek Life society. They can elect to live in Stonewall Suites, the University’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and allied living community.

Montclair State’s Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies department offers a minor in LGBTQ Studies that explores the connections between gender, sexuality and the political, economic, historical and cultural institutions and relationships that shape lives and identities.
