Montclair State University Selected for Inaugural Global Innovation Sandbox Cohort
The 12-month peer learning network connects startup universities, established institutions advancing high-stakes change, and proven innovators seeking to expand impact

Montclair State University has been selected to join the inaugural cohort of Future Universities Alliance’s Innovation Sandbox, a 12-month program connecting higher education institutions from around the world to support shared learning, and to connect founders, academic leaders and innovators working across a wide range of institutional models. The Innovation Sandbox brings institutions together around active challenges, creating a setting for shared problem-solving rather than one-size-fits-all adoption.
Montclair joins nearly 50 institutions across 23 countries in the peer-learning program, including Australia, Botswana, Germany, Ghana, Honduras, India, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Tanzania, Thailand, Türkiye, Uganda, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
About the Innovation Sandbox
The Innovation Sandbox is organized around three pathways:
- Launching new colleges and universities
- Advancing high-stakes initiatives within established institutions from concept to durable practice
- Helping proven models explore responsible scale through adaptation, partnerships, or networks.
The inaugural cohort reflects the breadth of contemporary higher education innovation: new universities building credibility from the ground up and established institutions rethinking curriculum, pedagogy, credentials, and institutional design. What connects them is a shared commitment to deepening the quality of learning and expanding access across diverse contexts.
“Montclair State University is excited to be a part of the Future Universities Alliance’s inaugural Innovation Sandbox and join a community dedicated to shaping the future of higher education,” said President Jonathan Koppell. “By bringing together diverse perspectives from around the globe, the Alliance will help Montclair remain responsive and prepared to support the many students, faculty, staff and communities we serve for generations to come. What an incredible opportunity to learn from a community of higher education innovators.”
“Higher education is not short of innovation, but it is short of the structures needed to connect that innovation, help it travel, and make it durable,” said Noah Pickus, founder of the Future Universities Alliance and Head of Global Strategy and Partnerships at Duke University, where the Alliance is based. “The Innovation Sandbox is our answer to that gap. We are pleased to convene this inaugural cohort and grateful for the trust these institutions have placed in one another to work together in this Alliance.”
The Sandbox program runs July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Participants will engage in monthly facilitated small-group sessions, structured milestone meetings with executive sponsors, and the Global Summit in Durham, North Carolina, October 3–5, 2026.
About the Future Universities Alliance
The Future Universities Alliance is a global platform connecting start-up, emerging, and established universities to reimagine what higher education can be. Incubated at Duke University, the Alliance operates as a pluralistic, open-source network that brings together innovators who embrace cooperation and are eager to adapt promising ideas to their own contexts.
The Alliance was born from a simple premise: meeting next-generation challenges, such as technological disruption, social polarization, and the pressures of economic development, requires universities that can think and act differently. Around the world, new institutions are boldly experimenting with fresh approaches, while established universities are seeking new ways to serve diverse learners and adapt to rapidly shifting demands. The Alliance helps unite these efforts into a shared, open, and collaborative ecosystem.
