Non-Credit English as a Second Language

English as a Second Language courses at Montclair State University help prepare non-native speakers of English for academic and professional work in American English and, through carefully integrated cultural orientation, for a smooth transition to life in the United States.

Montclair State University’s suburban campus in Montclair, New Jersey, is convenient to public transportation and cultural activities. Being New Jersey’s second largest and fastest growing University, enrollment consists of students who come from all New Jersey counties, other states and from many foreign countries.

Montclair State University’s English as a Second Language students come from various backgrounds: recent high school graduates, university students, business people and newcomers to the United States. They can choose from the part-time English as a Second Language program, with its various specialized courses, and credit-bearing English as a Second Language courses offered to matriculated (degree-seeking) students through the Department of Linguistics. Customized courses can also be provided on site to businesses and community groups.

Requirements for admission vary. Students choosing credit-bearing courses must apply and be admitted to the University. Part-time students attend an in-person registration at the beginning of each of four sessions. Except for matriculated University students, there is no financial aid available for English as a Second Language students. If applicable, students should check with their employers for reimbursement. The U.S. government does not provide F-1 student visa status for part-time study.
