Krystal Woolston, Assistant Director at the Center for Community Engagement, recently joined the REDSS lab. At the Center for Community Engagement, she oversees the service-learning program and manages the Bonner Leader AmeriCorps program. Krystal also assists with the Service-Learning Fellows program.

She first heard about REDSS from her advisor Jennifer Urban, co-director of the Lab. Krystal is interested in learning more about research and how to do it well. Through her experience in the lab, Krystal hopes to learn how to conduct different aspects of developmental research. So far, her favorite part about working in the lab has been meeting the whole team. Krystal commented, “Everyone has been very welcoming and friendly.”

The coolest place Krystal traveled to was Haiti. She said, “I went on a service trip there after the earthquake. It was sad to see the devastation, but life giving. It taught me so much about appreciating the intangible things we have in our life. I had no access to technology, which allowed me to really embrace the area I was in.”

In her free time, Krystal is a big fan of crafting, reading, hiking, and the beach. Krystal told us, “The beach is probably first- I think it’s the impact of growing up in a beach town.”

Something most people do not know about Krystal is that she sends out random Christmas cards to people she hasn’t talked to in years on the “halfway to Christmas Day” (June 25th) every year.

As for advice she would give to future students who are thinking about working in a research lab, Krystal left us with this concluding statement, “Take a chance and get to know what it is- you never know.”

Thank you, Krystal and welcome to the team! More interviews to come.
