The Margaret and Herman Sokol Award for Alumni Achievement and Civic Leadership

Herman ’37 and Margaret ’38 Sokol enjoyed successful careers after graduating from Montclair State University and were generous benefactors committed to improving future lives. Their philanthropy established the University’s first endowed professorship and the Margaret and Herman Sokol Institute for Pharmaceutical Life Sciences that advances research on solutions to global health issues. Herman was president of Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and part of the team that discovered tetracycline. Margaret was a public school math and science teacher. This award honors the commitment made by the Sokol Family and is bestowed on a Montclair State graduate who has made a significant contribution to industry, culture and/or society.

Rose and John J. Cali Award for Business Leadership and Community Engagement

This award, named for the Calis – Rose ’80 and John ’09 HON – longtime Montclair residents and committed supporters of Montclair State, honors the memory of John, whose love of music inspired him to make a generous gift to the University establishing the John J. Cali School of Music, and the service of Rose, a loyal alumna and a longtime member of the University’s Board of Trustees. This award is presented to a member of the business community, either an individual or a company, who is committed to creating strategic partnerships that enhance research and discovery and ultimately benefit the larger community.

The Mary Mochary and Michael Kasser Award for Philanthropic Leadership

Mary and Michael, the daughter and son of Alexander Kasser, for whom the University’s theater is named, are avid supporters of the arts and arts education. Their gifts honor the memory of their parents, Alexander and Elisabeth who, during World War II, worked with Raoul Wallenberg to save thousands of persecuted Hungarian Jews and political activists. This award is presented to a member of the community who, through exceptional generosity and engagement, is committed to creating new pathways and opportunities for Montclair State students.
