The MS in Biology at Montclair State University is a STEM designated degree that provides advanced training in modern biological sciences, preparing you for doctoral study, research careers, or leadership in education, health, and environmental sectors. Ecology & Evolution

This concentration explores biodiversity, ecological systems, and evolutionary processes. Students engage in courses like Physiological Ecology of Animals, Advanced Aquatic Biological Processes, and Evolutionary Mechanisms. The research and coursework emphasize the integrative nature of biological studies. Graduates often pursue careers in conservation, research, or environmental management.

Physiology

Students focusing on Physiology investigate the function of organisms at cellular, systemic, and behavioral levels. Courses such as Comparative Animal Physiology and Gross Mammalian Anatomy provide strong foundations for work in biomedical science, neuroscience, or academic research. Lab experience is emphasized throughout.

Teach the Next Generation of Biologists

With the program’s optional Instructional Certification – Subject Area Specialization (P-12) you can prepare yourself to teach biology in a classroom setting. Students who wish to pursue P-12 in Biological Science teacher certification must apply to and be admitted to the Teacher Education Program.


Admission Requirements

  • Equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
  • Applicants with non-U.S. degrees: Please visit the international applicants page to review U.S. degree equivalency information.
  • Prior to matriculation for the Master of Science degree in biology, the student should have completed a subject matter of at least twenty-four semester hours in biology and have adequate preparation in college chemistry, mathematics and physics.

Application Checklist

  • Application Deadline: Rolling admission.
  • Online Application: Submit application and $60 non-refundable fee (or waiver if applicable).
  • Transcript: One from each college attended.
  • Essays/Personal Statement – Please write one integrated essay providing a response to each of the following questions:
    • What are your goals for graduate study and your future career?
    • In what ways do your academic background and your professional experiences provide evidence of your potential for success in the program you selected and in your eventual career? Please give specific examples of relevant coursework and/or experience.
    • Is there any further information we should consider in assessing your candidacy?
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two (2)
  • Standardized Test Scores: GRE is optional.
