The Graduate Certificate in Molecular Biology is designed for professionals and post-baccalaureate students seeking targeted training in advanced biological concepts and laboratory techniques. This 17-credit STEM designated degree program provides a strong foundation in molecular biology and cell physiology, offering critical skills in a variety of essential molecular methodologies including PCR, automated DNA sequence analysis, molecular cloning, gene expression, fermentation technology, site-directed mutagenesis, immunology and cell manipulation techniques.

All certificate credits can be applied toward the MS in Molecular Biology. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or a related discipline. See the curriculum.

Advanced Lab Training

The unique feature of the Molecular Biology certificate program is its focus on laboratory methodologies in molecular biology and applied instruction in modern, well-equipped biology laboratories. Students complete courses such as Molecular Biology and Advanced Cell Physiology, with hands-on lab work throughout. The program is well-suited for those in research roles, who are looking to sharpen lab and analytical skills in preparation for graduate study or advancement in the biotech or life sciences workforce.

In-Person Certificate

All courses for the certificate program will be offered on evenings and/or weekends in the new 60,000 square foot Science Hall which features state-of-the-art biological teaching laboratories. A total of 14-15 semester hours (depending on elective course selection) are required for this program.


Admission Requirements

  • Equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
  • Applicants with non-U.S. degrees: Please visit the international applicants page to review U.S. degree equivalency information.
  • Prior to matriculation for the Certificate program in Molecular Biology, students should have completed a subject matter of at least 24 semester hours in biology, chemistry, and organic chemistry and have adequate preparation in mathematics and physics.
  • *Students seeking an F1/J1 visa are not eligible for this certificate program unless they are currently pursuing a master’s degree at Montclair State University and are able to simultaneously pursue both programs while maintaining their student visa requirements.

Application Checklist

  • Application Deadline: Rolling admission.
  • Online Application: Submit application and $60 non-refundable fee (or waiver if applicable).
  • Transcript: One from each college attended.
  • Essays/Personal Statement: Please write an integrated essay providing a response to each of the following questions:
    • What are your goals for graduate study and your future career?
    • In what ways do your academic background and your professional experiences provide evidence of your potential for success in the program you selected and in your eventual career?
    • Please give specific examples of relevant coursework and/or experience.
    • Is there any further information we should consider in assessing your candidacy?
