Theatre of Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Change

Certificate

Actors on stage in a production of Marie Antoinette

The Certificate in Theatre of Diversity, Inclusion and Social Change will prepare you to be a leader and advocate in both educational and professional theatre.

Centered on the belief that what happens on stage can shape what happens in the world, this 9-credit program explores theatre as a catalyst for empathy, empowerment and social action.

You’ll gain a strong foundation through courses in theatre history, theory and dramatic literature, while also engaging with applied theatre, criticism and global and interdisciplinary perspectives. This flexible curriculum connects theory and history with stage practice, allowing each student to tailor their coursework to match personal and professional goals. And you’ll have access to our world-renowned Alexander Kasser Theater and the internationally recognized artists that take its stage every year.

Whether you aspire to direct, teach, create or advocate, this certificate equips you with the skills to make a meaningful impact. You’ll leave prepared to contribute to educational institutions, theatre companies, community organizations and arts initiatives that prioritize diversity, inclusion and social change. Opportunities Beyond the Classroom

Montclair State’s Kasser Theatre is home to Peak Performances, a series that brings world-class artists and companies to campus. Students in both the BA and MA programs get to engage with leading figures in the field, including names like Robert Wilson and The Abbey Theatre.

Beyond campus, students also gain hands-on experience through partnerships with local theatres such as Luna Stage. These collaborations give students the chance to perform, stage manage, and provide dramaturgical support, while building professional connections that continue to grow each year.
