Translation and Interpreting in Spanish Certificate

There is a growing demand for translators and interpreters who can deliver precision in health professions, legal fields, as well as audiovisual and audio description markets. Montclair’s Graduate Certificate in Translation and Interpreting in Spanish is designed to prepare you with the skills to excel in these roles. This 12-credit, graduate-level program provides comprehensive training with emphasis on basic computer translation and terminology skills. It instructs students in the techniques and methods of translation and interpreting – from English to Spanish and Spanish to English – required in medical, legal/judicial, audiovisual and audio description settings.

The program fulfills real-world needs by preparing graduates for roles in hospitals, courts, government agencies, entertainment industries and global organizations where clear, culturally-informed communication is critical.

Alumni Success

Adjunct professor Abigail Fana graduated with a BA in English, minors in Linguistics and Spanish and a certificate in Translation in 2020; and a master’s in Spanish and a graduate certificate in Translation and Interpreting in 2022. She teaches translation and Spanish, has led speaking spills workshops for the Department, and co-led Montclair’s first Spanish simulcast of Commencement in 2023.

Admission Requirements

  • Equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree.
  • B.A. in Spanish, a minimum of 12 credits in Spanish at the undergraduate level or equivalent proficiency exam.
  • Applicants with non-U.S. degrees: Please visit the international applicants page to review U.S. degree equivalency information.
  • *Students seeking an F1/J1 visa are not eligible for this certificate program unless they are currently pursuing a master's degree at Montclair State University and are able to simultaneously pursue both programs while maintaining their student visa requirements.

Application Checklist

  • Online Application: Submit application and $60 non-refundable fee (or waiver if applicable).
  • Essay: Please write an integrated essay providing a response to each of the following questions:
    • What are your goals for graduate study and your future career?
    • In what ways do your academic background and your professional experiences provide evidence of your potential for success in the program you selected and in your eventual career? Please give specific examples of relevant coursework and/or experience.
    • Is there any further information we should consider in assessing your candidacy?
