With uncertainty comes possibility. As educators adjust to the new responsibilities of online teaching, Montclair State University is holding true to its rich teacher preparation history by creating a new certificate program designed to build the skills and confidence of educators in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Registration is now available for the new, fully online course, Online Instruction for Students with Disabilities. This is the first of the two-course series that will constitute Montclair State’s College of Education and Human Services’ new Virtual Learning for Students with Disabilities program.* The certificate is designed for teachers who are looking to discover new technologies as they redesign curricula and instruction for the virtual learning environment.

Course instructors are practicing special educators who are also technology leaders in their schools and experienced adjunct faculty in the Department of Teaching and Learning. They are acquainted with the challenges of this moment because they are facing them too.

“As educators, we have all been challenged by the abrupt shift to online instruction. Those of us who teach students with disabilities have the added burden of ensuring that our students continue to learn and progress, without falling further behind,” says Associate Professor Jennifer Goeke.

Specifically designed to address the urgent challenges teachers and students are facing, the certificate provides immediately applicable tools and strategies to transition from teaching in the classroom to providing virtual instruction. All PK-12 teachers, general and special education, can benefit from the course curriculum.

“This program is not just about learning new apps and programs; it’s about understanding how to use technology to create an interesting, inviting, and engaging virtual classroom for all students.”

Students are able to take program coursework at this time by submitting a Non-Degree Application to The Graduate School.
