Dancing in the Street: A Day of 100 Solos
Special event showcases choreography performed by Dance majors on campus

Performances by more than 100 Dance majors in Montclair State’s Department of Theatre and Dance recently took place around campus as a culminating experience of spring 2021.
Day of 100 Solos was inspired by the work of guest choreographers and repertory workshops, says Professor of Theatre and Dance Elizabeth McPherson, adding that it provided opportunities for the dancers to investigate and embody a deeper understanding of movement.
“I hope that people got the chance to see art in a different light,” says Jordan Jackson, among the Dance majors who participated in adapting the choreography for the outdoors.
For many of the students, it was the first time they were engaged in a 45-minute continuous performance, and as the semester closed amid the pandemic, it provided a welcomed release.
“That was the entire point of this piece,” says Dance major Sabrina Petrelli, “to create a community in the crazy times that we live in now.”
“Dancing in the grass,” adds Dance major Amelia Sanders, “was wonderful.”
