Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Coming to Microsoft Services on Campus
Posted in: News

To strengthen account security and protect our campus community from cyber threats, Montclair State University is implementing Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for Microsoft services, including Outlook, OneDrive, Teams, and other Microsoft 365 applications. This change will begin Tuesday, May 13, 2025 and affect all students, faculty, and staff.
Why MFA?
Cybersecurity threats such as phishing and credential theft continue to rise across higher education. Passwords alone are no longer sufficient to protect sensitive data, especially when reused or exposed in breaches. Duo MFA adds a second layer of protection by requiring a second form of verification—typically a push notification to your mobile device—before granting access to your account.
What to Expect
Starting on Tuesday, May 13th, when you log into your Microsoft 365 apps using your university account, you’ll be prompted to verify your identity with Duo. If you’re already using Duo to access campus applications, you won’t need to install anything new. Just approve the Duo prompt as usual.
Affected services include:
- Outlook (desktop, mobile, and web)
- OneDrive and SharePoint
- Microsoft Teams
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint online
- Other Microsoft 365 web apps
How to Prepare
- Enroll in Duo: If you haven’t already, enroll your device by visiting the Duo MFA webpage.
- Update your apps: Make sure you have the latest version of Outlook and Teams, especially on mobile.

Security Starts with You
