Excavations in the Ancient Caucasus

Dr. Ristvet’s research focuses on the ancient cultures and early states of the Middle East, with a particular focus on Mesopotamia and Syria, and more recently on Azerbaijan, in the former Soviet Union, where her excavations have brought to light the remains of a previously unknown civilization, on the frontiers of the ancient Assyrian, Persian, Seleucid and Roman empires. She is the author of two books, Ritual, Performance and Politics in the Ancient Near East (Cambridge 2014) and In the Beginning: World History from HumEvolution to the First States (New York 2007). In this lecture at Montclair, she will describe exciting discoveries made in her excavations from 2008-2014.
