Alumni Mentoring Corner

Welcome to the Educational Opportunity Fund Program's Alumni Mentoring Corner. Congratulations to you for taking this step to explore new careers through developing a relationship with a mentor in the EOP Alumni Mentoring Program.

You might be asking, what is mentoring?
Mentoring is a process by which a more experienced and presumably wiser person takes a younger person under his or her wing, freely offering advice, support, and encouragement.

What mentoring is not?
Mentoring is not intended for the mentor to become financially or emotionally responsible for you. The mentor is not a surrogate parent. Your mentor will be a guide to the world of work. Your mentor can serve as an important liaison between school and the workplace, neighborhood and business. The mentor will be able to bridge the gap between the theoretical world of the classroom and the real-life working world.

The Alumni Corner is designed to assist Educational Opportunity Program undergraduates to develop a relationship with Alumni in the student's chosen profession. The interaction between the mentor and the mentee will facilitate the student's interest, knowledge, and create the appropriate career paths that will accelerate the academic and social success of undergraduate students.

Why should you participate in this Mentoring Program?
You should participate in the EOP Alumni Mentoring Program because it will open the door to career exploration by providing an opportunity for you to talk with a person in a profession of interest to you. This person, your mentor, has volunteered to share their work experience with you. Mentors involved in this Program are all Montclair State University graduates who have volunteered to serve as mentors for EOP students. Mentors are business or professional people who are in a unique position to introduce you to the workplace as a trusted advisor or guide. You can ask questions and discuss work-related issues with your mentor. The relationship that you develop with your mentor depends on you. The mentors that have been chosen are all business and/or professional men and women who have demonstrated achievement in their particular fields

What if you are undecided on a career?
If you are undecided on a career or would like to find out about a particular career, we strongly suggest that you first research an occupation. You can research a particular occupation by contacting the MSU Career Development Office at 973-655-5194. We also have a self assessment tool, FOCUS, which is an easy, self-directed, and interactive, computerized program that will help you to make important major or career decisions.
