The Office of Summer Sessions and Special Programs oversees the operation of Summer Sessions, Winter Session, Gifted and Talented Youth Programs, Hi Jump Program, and certificate programs. Summer and Winter Sessions provide opportunities for students to utilize the summer and winter “breaks” to continue their pursuit of their undergraduate or graduate studies. To stay on track, Montclair State students, visiting students currently enrolled at other colleges and universities, students who are accepted to begin their college or university studies for the subsequent fall semester, and high achieving high school juniors and seniors are encouraged to pursue their studies during winter and summer. Opportunities are also available for members of the community to earn certificates, and for Academically Gifted and Talented Youth to expand their horizons with innovative courses and activities. High school graduates who have been out of school for at least two years may apply through the Admissions Office to enroll in summer courses.
Summer Sessions
Face to face, online, and hybrid undergraduate and graduate credit courses are offered from May to August in the arts, business, computer science, education, human services, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences. Courses are intense, comprehensive, and regardless of session, they all meet the same academic rigor and hours requirements as those offered during the fall and spring semesters.
Summer Sessions begins in mid-May with a three-week session, three four-week sessions, two six-week sessions, an eight-week session, and a twelve week session, followed by a three-week post-session in August. Courses are also offered on ten Saturdays within the twelve-week session. Daytime classes generally meet Monday through Thursday while evening classes meet on a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule.
Winter Session
Montclair State's Winter Session offers students the opportunity to take online or hybrid courses and earn up to four credits during the four-week Winter Session that runs between the fall and spring semesters. Students commence their studies online in December and begin the face-face component of the hybrid courses the first week in January. Courses are intense and comprehensive and they all meet the same academic rigor and hours requirements as those offered during the fall and spring semesters.
Academically Gifted and Talented Youth Program
Montclair State University’s Academically Gifted and Talented Youth Program provides accelerated, inquiry based courses designed to meet the unique intellectual and social needs of high ability students. Gifted students in grades K-high school may participate in weekend sessions during fall and spring and two 3-week weekday programs during the summer, which enable students to explore specialized areas of interest.
Hi Jump Program
High achieving high school juniors and seniors, who wish to enrich their education by enrolling in undergraduate courses, are invited to apply to the Hi Jump Program at Montclair State University. Through this program, students can earn college credit, experience the rigors of college course work, and get a taste of college life.
Certificate Programs
MSU is dedicated to providing excellent instruction to help students advance in their careers. Students can advance there careers by enrolling in an MSU certificate program and learn best practices in programs such as the Post-Licensure Certificate in Forensic Psychology and the Culinary Studies Certificate.
In addition, the office provides other academic support services for the University including scheduling and registration for special non-credit and credit programs and workshops, as well as, courses on-and off-campus for grant-funded programs, English as a second language instruction, Educational Opportunity Fund residential experience, international summer institutes through the Global Education Center, the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children, and Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing.
