MAMaster's

An elementary school teacher helps a student read a book.

If you’re passionate about helping every student develop strong literacy skills, Montclair’s MA in Reading will prepare you to become a leader in literacy instruction and support.

This 33-credit  program is designed for certified teachers with two years of experience who want to deepen their expertise in reading theory, assessment, and instruction. You’ll gain the skills to diagnose reading challenges, design targeted interventions, and use evidence-based practices to help diverse learners thrive.

Coursework explores the foundations of literacy development, advanced methods for teaching reading and writing, and strategies for working with English Language Learners. You’ll also learn how to lead schoolwide literacy initiatives and collaborate with colleagues to improve instructional practices.

The program includes the requirements for the Reading Specialist Certification in New Jersey – a credential that opens doors to roles such as literacy coach, reading specialist, or district-level literacy leader.

With guidance from faculty experts, you’ll be able to apply what you learn directly in your classroom or school community. The schedule is designed for working teachers. With the exception of two courses in the practicum sequence, all of the courses are fully online.

If you’re ready to champion literacy and make a difference in students’ lives, Montclair’s MA in Reading will give you the tools to lead with confidence. See the curriculum.
