The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University hosted Dr. Koen DePryck to discuss a teaching method known as, “Challenge Based Learning”.

This event was hosted by the Deans office and the CHSS Digital Media CoLab handled the virtual meeting and on-site technology support. This was the last college meeting of the 2022-2023 academic school year, and took place on April 5, 2023 from 3:30-5:30. Challenge Based Learning enhances students problems solving and comprehension skills, centering a class around a real world problem such as global warming. Using different perspectives of problem solving  students can look from all angels to conceptualize multiple ways to go about achieving their goal. This method of teaching can impact a teachers control in the classroom, letting students sort through personal and social impacts to come up with possible solutions. Once the possible questions that need to be examined are identified the professors then attempt to guide students through the thinking process that could lead them to their end goal.

When asked, ” Why do you feel reassured that Challenge Based Learning is necessary, ” Dr. Koen DePryck responded , ” I believe that education is one of the few elements that we have that can really make difference as far as our future is concerned… I really believe that is how we are built evolutionary. And with all my years with being involved with education I have never come across something as impactful as challenge based learning. Its not about replacing all other methods but about how we can get all learners involved in shaping the future… It’s a really crucial element in moving beyond the education and society divide…They can really hands on make a difference, not after college but while they are in college.”
