Your student’s privacy and independence are protected under federal law. At Montclair State University, we follow the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which means your student’s academic records belong to them. Families can still support their students, but access to information must be granted by the student.
Understand FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of your student’s educational records. To learn more about what FERPA means for you and your student, visit FERPA Information on Red Hawk Central.
Two Types of Access Your Student Can Grant
Proxy Access (Academic Information)
If your student wants to grant you access to view certain records (like grades or class schedules), they can set you up as a proxy. This decision must come from your student and should be discussed together before access is granted. Learn how your student can give proxy access: How to Give Proxy Access.
Authorized User (Billing & Payments Only)
This is different from proxy access. Authorized user accounts are created in the payment portal to allow someone else to view and pay bills. Authorized users cannot access academic records. Learn More About Authorized Users.
