Philosophy BA/MBA

The New Philosophy BA/MBA Program

Philosophical training provides a powerful foundation for the graduate study of business administration. Philosophy majors can bring to the study of business their skills of analysis and reasoning, as well as their ability to think carefully about values. To make the most of this connection between philosophy and business, our Philosophy department and the University’s Feliciano School of Business are partnering for a new “4 + 1” Philosophy BA/MBA program.

What is it?
Through this new program students can earn both a Philosophy BA and a General MBA in 5 years.

How does it work?
Students will spend the first three years taking courses required for the Philosophy BA. In their fourth year, along with required philosophy courses, students will complete 6 credits’ worth of graduate business (MBA) coursework. These 6 credits will satisfy both undergraduate degree requirements and count toward achievement of the MBA degree. In their fifth year, students will take the remaining courses required for a General MBA, in full-time format.

How do I apply for this program?
You can apply for acceptance into the “4 + 1” program in the second half of your junior year, and you will be admitted into the MBA program in your senior year, as long as you have earned a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA in your undergraduate program overall.  (You will not need to take the business graduate admissions test, the GMAT.)

There is one additional requirement, and there are two ways to satisfy it:  Students must either (a) complete undergraduate courses in Accounting, Statistics, and Finance with a grade of at least “B-”, or (b) students can complete the equivalent Foundation Modules online in each of these areas prior to the last semester of their senior year.

Where do I find more information?
The chairperson of the Philosophy department, Kirk McDermid, can answer questions and give you more details about this new program.
