Brian Baker '10 is one of fifteen Veteran Associates participating in an eight-week Veteran Associate Program at the New York Stock Exchange. Baker is an infantry officer in the Army National Guard.
On Thursday, July 5, veterans representing several branches of the U.S. Armed Forces rang The Closing Bell to commemorate the launch of the NYSE Euronext Veteran Associate Program (VAP). The VAP provides veterans and veteran students meaningful, professional assignments over the course of 8 weeks at the New York Stock Exchange.
NYSE Euronext is one of only a few financial services organizations to implement a program specifically designed for military veterans. In addition to the VAP, NYSE Euronext is also committed to supporting our country’s veterans through the NYSE Euronext Foundation, NYSE Euronext Veteran Employee Resource Group, and NYSE Euronext Human Resources.
Fifteen veterans representing several branches of the U.S. Armed Forces are currently participating in the inaugural NYSE Euronext Veteran Associate Program (VAP), a pioneering initiative that provides recent military veterans from across America with valuable business experience in the financial services industry during an eight week engagement at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). A key component of the Program is the Executive Educator series, which is comprised of professional and financial market educational sessions presented by the NYSE Euronext Senior Executive and Management team, as well as external industry experts. NYSE Euronext is one of only a few financial services organizations to have a program specifically designed for military veterans. The company's program dedicates 20% of all available New York City-based internship positions for military veterans.
"Our heroes returning home from military service can also be stars in business, as their training, skills and discipline translates extremely well to the private sector," said Duncan L. Niederauer, CEO, NYSE Euronext. "Through our Veteran Associate Program we are trying to help aid this transition by providing a truly unique learning experience about our company, financial markets and the business community. This program benefits them personally and professionally, enhances their employment prospects, and also gives us the opportunity to learn a great deal from them and their perspectives. We encourage other organizations to do the same."
The NYSE Euronext Veteran Associate Program class of 2012, who with Mr. Niederauer rang the Closing Bell® at the New York Stock Exchange, is comprised of:

In 2011, the unemployment rate for veterans (ages 18-24) was 30.2% across the U.S. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). The VAP program is designed to equip veterans with practical, hands-on training, experience and adequate resources in order to obtain permanent employment. Each veteran is partnered with sponsors from NYSE's newly formed Veteran Employee Resource Group, which consists of NYSE managers and employees who have served in the Armed Forces or who support veteran employees. NYSE Euronext Deputy Chairman Marshall Carter, former chairman and CEO of the State Street Bank and Trust Co., West Point alumni, and Marine Corps officer who was awarded the Navy Cross and Purple Heart during two years' service as an infantry officer in Vietnam, serves as the executive sponsor of the Veteran Associate Program.
