New York, NY (1/25/08) - Freshman Monique Riddick (Edison, NJ / Bishop Ahr) posted an automatic qualifying standard in the shot put and was one of six Red Hawks to post NCAA Division III Championship qualifying marks as Montclair State returned from a month-long break, competing in the Great Dane Classic held at the 168 th Armory on Friday afternoon.
Riddick captured the shot put as she captured the event with her best throw of 13.95 meters (45-feet, 9.25-inches). She will be among the field of entries when the NCAA Division III Championships takes place at Ohio Northern University in Ada, OH on March 14-15.
On the men’s side in the same event, junior Eugene Asimou (Livingston, NJ / Livingston), who posted an provisional qualifying mark in December, upped his standing on the provisional list as he was second with a throw of 16.12 meters (52-feet, 10.75-inches). Asimou had throw 15.89 meters at the Seton Hall Games.
Elsewhere, the Red Hawks now have two athletes on the provisional qualifying list for the men’s 55 meter hurdles as sophomore Adenford Jean-Philippe (Irvington, NJ / Irvington) and freshman Will Brown (Gloucester, NJ / Palmyra) finished 2-3 in the event. Brown and Jean-Philippe finished in the same order during the preliminaries as each hit the standar with times of 7.68 and 7.69, respectively. In the finals, the two then reversed places with better times as Jean-Philippe ran 7.63 while Brown clocked in at 7.65.
Senior Tony Williams ( Newark, NJ / Malcolm X. Shabazz), who last year finished fourth at last year’s NCAA Championships in the 55 meters, may get a chance to return as he placed third in the event against several Division I competitors. Williams ran a time of 6.43, four-tenths of a second off his own school record set at the NCAAs.
Sophomore Judline Tumson ( Newark, NJ/Arts) gave Montclair State put her name on the list of provisional qualifiers in the women’s 55 meters as she ran a time of 7.32 during the preliminaries. Tumson finished eighth in the event overall.
Elsewhere, Tumson, Farida Jawando (Colts Neck, NJ / Monmouth Regional), Amanda Hart (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) and Maragret Owusu (New Brunswick, NJ / New Brunswick) placed 15 th in the 4x400 meter relay as the quartet posted a time of 4.10.13 against a Division I-dominated field. Meanwhile, the men’s 4x400 relay team of Williams, Andrew Nnadi ( West Orange, NJ / West Orange), Terry Iavarone ( North Arlington, NJ / North Arlington) and Akeem Thomas ( Teaneck, NJ / Teaneck) was 13 th with a time of 3:26.43.
The Red Hawks return to action next Saturday, February 2 as they travel to East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania to compete in the DeSchriver Invitational.
