Montclair, NJ (1/27/08) - The Montclair State indoor track and field team enjoyed one of its finest days in recent memory on Friday and the Red Hawks were rewarded for it as sprinter Tony Williams (Newark, NJ / Shabazz) and shot putters Eugene Asimou (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) and Monique Riddick (Edison, NJ / Bishop Ahr) earned weekly honors from the New Jersey Athletic Conference on Monday.
MSU placed six athletes on the NCAA qualifying list at the Great Dane Classic held at the 168th Street Armory on Friday, including the three award winners as the Red Hawks have won a combined six NJAC weekly honors this season.
Riddick was named the Female Field Athlete of the Week after captruing the shot put at the meet. Riddick, competing in just her third collegiate meet, won the event comprised of predominately Division I competitors with her best throw of 13.95 meters (45-feet, 9.25-inches) an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor Championships. She will be among the field of entries when the NCAA Division III Championships takes place at Ohio Northern University in Ada, OH on March 14-15. The throw was just three feet shy of the school record.
On the men’s side in the same event, Asimou earned his third Male Field Athlete of the Week accolade as he finished second in the shot put. Competing against the Divison I field, Asimou registered an NCAA provisional throw of 16.12 meters (52-feet, 10.75-inches), upping his standing on the provisional list. Asimou had throw 15.89 meters at the Seton Hall Games and has posted two first and one second-place finish this season.
Williams, who last year finished fourth at last year’s NCAA Championships in the 55 meters, earned his first honor this season as he placed third in the event against several Division I competitors. Williams ran a time of 6.43, four-tenths of a second off his own school record set at the NCAAs. It was Williams' first 55 meter event this year.
