Montclair, NJ (4/7/08) – At the Penn Invitational at Franklin Field on Saturday, freshmen Monique Riddick (Edison, NJ / Bishop Ahr) and Will Brown (Gloucester, NJ / Palmyra) and junior Eugene Asimou (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) each posted NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks to help the Montclair State outdoor track team to another strong showing at the meet.
On Monday, the trio was honored for their performances as Brown was named the Male Track Athlete of the Week while Asimou and Riddick were chosen as the Male and Female Field Athletes of the Week, respectively by the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Riddick, the NCAA indoor national champion in the shot put, will get a chance to perhaps add an outdoor title as well as she hit an automatic mark in the event as she bested a field of 21 competitors with a throw of 14.27 meters (.07 better than the automatic qualifying standard) at the Penn Invitational. It is the second straight week that Riddick has captured the shot put. She then went on to finish 12th in the discus (field of 26) with a throw of 36.13 meters and 15th in the hammer throw (36.41 meters) in a field of 25 athletes.
Asimou earned his first outdoor win in the shot put as he took the event with a throw of 15.74 meters to put his name on the NCAA Provisional Qualifying list at the Penn Invitational (in a field of 22 competitors). Asimou also placed ninth (field of 21) in the hammer throw with a best mark of 45.30 meters.
Brown, who competed in the 55 hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships, is now on the provisional list in the 110 hurdles for the outdoor season as he won that event with a time of 14.60 (.35 seconds better than the provisional mark). Brown beat a field of 24 competitors and won by .17 seconds in the field comprised of Division I, II and III athletes.
