Men's Lacrosse Reaches Skyline Title Contest

Montclair, NJ (4/30/08) – Junior attack A.J. Bachman (Montville, NJ / Mountain Lakes) scored five goals while senior Bryan Klimchak (Clark, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson) added four and an assist as top-seeded Montclair State moved into the championship game of the Skyline Conference Men’s Lacrosse Tournament with a 13-3 victory over No. 4 seed Richard Stockton at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

Junior goalkeeper Thomas Bowers (Hamburg, NJ / Pope John XXIII) made 11 saves to become the all-time leader in Montclair State history as the Red Hawks advance to the title contest on Saturday, May 3 as they host No. 3 seed Kean University at 6:00 pm. The Cougars punched their ticket to the finals with a 15-4 win at No. 1 New York Maritime in the other semifinal on Wednesday. Earlier this season, MSU posted a 14-5 win over Kean in Union. The winner of the Skyline Tournament receives and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Junior attack Keith Bologno (Glen Gardner, NJ / Voorhees) had a goal and an assist for Richard Stockton, which concluded its season at 7-9 with its second loss to Montclair State in four days. The Ospreys fell to Montclair 15-4 in the regular-season finale for both teams last Saturday.

Montclair jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter as Bachman and Mario Passafiume (Boonton, NJ / Mountain Lakes) netted goals in the first period. Richard Stockton would come right back in the second with two goals in a 14-second span. Bologno put the Ospreys on the board with 12:05 left and Jonathan Kelly (Howell, NJ/Howell) connected on the man-advantage to tie the game at two.

But that would be the last goal Richard Stockton would score until 42 seconds left in the game – a span of 41:09. Meanwhile, the Red Hawks went on a 10-goal run. Klimchak gave MSU the lead for good with an unassisted tally and Bachman scored seven ticks later before Patrick Nann’s (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) man-up tally with 7:34 to play gave MSU a 5-2 lead. Bachman would collect his second goal of the game with 2:20 to go and Klimchak delivered the big blow as he scored just ahead of the first-half horn as MSU took a 7-2 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Klimchak scored the first and last goals in the third period for Montclair State as the Red Hawks extended their lead to 11-2. Bachman and John Schiavone (Montclair, NJ / Montclair) each had goals in the period. Taylor Bonner (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) collected his first goal early in the final quarter before Bachman finished off the run with his fifth tally with 5:49 left. Stockton’s Larry Andersen (Sicklerville, NJ / Winslow Township) accounted for the final goal.

Bowers added three ground balls as he broke Vinny DeGennaro’s (656 from 2000-2003) record for career saves as he now has 661 in his two-plus seasons with Montclair. Klimchak also reached a milestone in the evening as his first goal gave him career point No. 200 as he moved into a tie for fourth place on the Red Hawks’ scoring list with 204 points. Bonner registered eight ground balls while Patrick Ferry (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) and Tyler Meixner (Hamburg, NJ / Vernon) each forced three turnovers. Matt Sharp (Wilmington,DE / Salesianum) had five ground balls.

For Richard Stockton Pete Marcelliano (Morristown, NJ / West Morris-Mendham) made 10 saves while Jeff Doyle (Voorhees, NJ / Eastern) had one in his one quarter of play. Alec Chisholm (Jackson, NJ / Jackson) had six ground balls and three caused turnovers while Ian Muchanic (Kendall Park, NJ / South Brunswick) had five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
