Riddick, Brown Named Outstanding Athletes at NJAC Track Championships

Pomona, NJ (5/3/08) – Freshman athletes Will Brown (Gloucester, NJ / Palmyra) and Monique Riddick (Edison, NJ / Edison) were each named the Outstanding Male and Female Athletes, respectively as the Montclair State men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams each finished fifth at the 2008 NJAC Championships held at Richard Stockton College on Saturday.

Junior Eugene Asimou ( Livingston, NJ / Livingston) was a chosen as the Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the meet as the men’s team totaled 86 points while the women’s squad collected 60 points.

Brown and Riddick each won a pair of events with NCAA marks. Brown captured both the 110 and 400 meter hurdles as he hit provisional times in both events. Brown captured the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.58 (7 th best nationally) and then came back to take top honors in the 400 hurdles with a time of 54.02. Meanwhile, Riddick took first in both the shot put and discus. In the shot put, Riddick hit the NCAA automatic qualifying mark for the second time this season as she posted a meet record 14.28 meters, the second-best throw in Division III this season. She then added her second victory in the discus with a mark of 37.74 meters.

Asimou had three Top 3 finishes, including wins in the shot put and discus. Asimou posted an NCAA Provisional mark of 16.04 meters in the shot put and 46.50 in the hammer throw while also taking third in the discus (42.90 meters).

Brown would help the men’s 4x400 meter relay team take third as he joined Andrew Nnadi (West Orange, NJ / West Orange), Elvis Cole (Hackensack, NJ / Northern Highlands) and Terry Iavarone (North Arlington, NJ / North Arlington) to register a time of 3:26.02. Akeem Thomas ( Teaneck, NJ / Teaneck) placed third in the long jump (6.57 meters) and John Tsihlas ( Livingston, NJ / Livingston) was fourth in the pole vault (3.75 meters).

Mark Seemon ( North Plainfield, NJ / Union Catholic) finished fourth in the shot put (14.09 meters) and Mario Morrison-Bird ( West Orange, NJ / West Orange) was fifth in the discus (41.86 meters) while Michael Palazzo (Toms River, NJ / Toms River South) was ninth in the javelin (46.71 meters). Iavarone finished fourth in the 800 meters (1:59.23).

On the women’s side, the 4x100 relay team of Amanda Hart ( Livingston, NJ / Livingston), Judline Tumson ( Newark, NJ / Arts), Farida Jawando (Colts Neck, NJ / Monmouth Regional) and Krystal Wyche (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) placed second with a time of 49.76.

Tumson and Hart went 2-3, respectively in the 100 meters with times of 12.23 and 12.534 hilwe Hart also placed third in the 200 meters (26.31). Jawando collected a third-place finish in the 800 meters (2:23.16).
