Volleyball Takes Two on First Day a Red Dragon Classic

Cortland, NY (8/29/08) – Junior middle blocker Kara Burnham (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) tallied 21 kills along with eight total blocks, including seven solo as Montclair State opened its season with a pair of wins at the Red Dragon Classic held at Cortland on Friday. MSU defeated Fredonia in four sets before sweeping past Plattsburgh State to earn a berth in the semifinals on Saturday.

Sophomore Devon Johnston (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) added 20 kills and 25 digs as the Red Hawks opened the year with two victories for the first time since 2002. MSU dropped the first set to Fredonia, 25-19 before taking the final three 25-18, 25-17, 27-25. Montclair then got past Plattsburgh 25-22, 25-19, 25-18.

Montclair State moves into the semifinals of the tournament where they will face New Paltz at 12:00 pm. A win would put MSU into the championship game against either host Cortland or Lebanon Valley at 4:00 pm. A loss would drop the Red Hawks into the 2:00 pm third-place match.

Against Fredonia, junior Karen Martin (Sicklerville, NJ /Washington Township) posted a team-best 12 kills and 14 digs along with three aces while Bunham collected 11 kills, three aces and five solo blocks. Johnson had 10 kills and 11 digs while junior Anna Chesnakova (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) had eight kills and six total blocks.

Junior setter Raisa Silva (Newark, NJ / East Side) had 43 assists as she moved past the 2,500 mark for her career. Junior Meghan Stevens (Woodcliffe Lake, NJ / Pascack Hills) added 13 digs.

Martin again led the Red Hawks in kills in the victory over Plattsburgh. She also added five digs. Burnham and Johnston each had 10 kills with Johnston adding 14 digs. Silva had 36 assists while Stevens and Adrianne Moe (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) had 15 and 10 digs, respectively.
