Montclair, NJ (11/12/08) – Junior forward Natalia Sisti (Lincoln Park, NJ / DePaul Catholic) had a hand in all three goals over the final 2:19 of the contest as third-seeded Montclair State advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC Division III Metro Women’s Soccer Championship with a 3-0 victory over sixth-seeded St. Joseph’s College at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Senior midfielder Jen Kelleher ( Englishtown, NJ / Old Bridge) had a goal as the Red Hawks (11-10-1) move on and will face No. 2 seed New York University on Saturday, November 15 at 6:00 pm. The game will take place at New Jersey Institute of Technology. It will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams as NYU posted a 2-1 victory back on October 26. The will also be the third against one another in the ECAC Tournament. Montclair won the 2000 title with a 1-0 victory over the Violets and NYU returned the favor the following year with a 2-0 triumph in the title game.
Junior goalkeeper Dana Carney ( Patchogue, NY / Patchogue-Medford) had 16 saves for the Golden Eagles, who finished the year at 14-9. St. Joseph’s was making its third consecutive ECAC Tournament appearance.
Locked in a scoreless battle, the game was a contest between goalkeepers Carney and Leah Tepperman ( North Andover, MA / North Andover), who made a combined nine stops in the first half. Carney made two in the first two minutes and Tepperman came up with a huge hand stop on Angie Merante ( Holtsville, NY / Sachem) at the 15:28 mark to keep the game at 0-0. Montclair then came within inches of a goal but Rachel Senyszyn’s ( Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) shot from deep on the right side hit the post. Carney would go onto add four more saves as Montclair held a 9-7 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes.
The second half appeared to heading the same way as each team got chance after chance only to be denied. Carney made 10 saves in the period and Tepperman five until the Red Hawks were finally able to break through with just over two minutes to play.
Senyszyn pushed a ball up along the left side and fired a shot that Carney made a sliding stop on. But the ball caromed across the box leaving the net wide open. Carney made a valiant attempt to get back into position, but Sisti crossed a shot from the right side of the six yard line past a diving Carney and inside the left post for her fifth of the season and a 1-0 MSU lead with 2:19 to play.
It took just 38 seconds for the Red Hawks to add to the lead as Senyszyn crossed a pass to a cutting Sisti inside 10 yards for her second goal as MSU went up 2-0 at the 88:19 mark. Montclair would made it three goals in a 2:01 span as Carney made two solid stops on shots by Angela Martone ( Toms River, NJ / Toms River South) and Sisti. But the third shot would not be a fortunate one for Carney and the Golden Eagles as Kelleher deposited the rebound into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.Tepperman finished with eight saves posting her sixth shutout as Montclair State owned a 25-12 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
