Orlando, FL (3/15/09) – Senior lefthander Kelly Karp (Edison, NJ / Edison) tossed a four-hit shutout while freshman Adrian Rastocny (Colonia, NJ / Colonia) allowed just one hit in six innings of work as Montclair State swept a pair of contests at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday.
Freshman Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) drove in four runs as the Red Hawks blanked Westminster College 3-0 and beat Fontbonne University 8-2 to even its record at 2-2.
Karp (1-0) tossed her second career shutout as she limited Westminster to just four singles. She stuck out eight and walked two.
Montclair would get all the runs it needed in the fourth inning as it scored three times, all with two out. Kelly Nance (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro) singled with one out and after a second out, moved to second on Sam Depken’s (Wyckoff, NJ / Ramapo) single. Leslie Gonzalez’ (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) added a base hit to load the bases and Mozek cleared them with a triple for the only scoring of the game.
The rest was left up to Karp who retired 13 of the final 15 batters she faced.
In the second game, MSU scored the first seven runs of the game – all in the first four innings.
Gonzalez led off the first with a single and later scored on a mishandled grounder to give Montclair a 1-0 lead. Karp lofted a sacrifice fly as the Red Hawks were up two after the first inning. Gonzalez would extend the lead with an RBI single in the second and Montclair added two more in third as Megan Durkin (West Orange, NJ / West Orange) roped a two-run double for a 5-0 lead. Mozek lofted a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch to give Montclair its seven-run lead.
Meanwhile, Rastocny (1-1) kept Fontbonne off the board as she allowed just one earned run and a hit in the first six innings, striking out seven and walking three to earn her first win of the year.
Gonzalez had two hits to lead Montclair State.
The Red Hawks are off on Monday and return to action on Tuesday, March 17. MSU faces Anderson at 9:00 pm followed by a 1:00 pm contest with Hope, MI.
