Baseball Tripped Up Twice by Methodist, NC Wesleyan

Fayetteville, NC (3/17/09) Sophomore shortstop Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) had three hits and drove in a run over the course of two games, however the Montclair State baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Tuesday. MSU fell to Methodist College 6-4 before being blanked by North Carolina Wesleyan.

The gameswere Montclair's (2-4) first on its trip through the North Caolina-Birginia region after a two-day layoff due to rain.

Bionde helped Montclair get off to a good start against Methodist as he singled to open the game in the first. He would get to second on a wild pitch and after advancing to third on a ground out, scored as Ed Kloepping (Pennsville, NJ / Pennsville) smacked an RBI single to left field. Bionde then extended the lead the next inning as he slapped an RBI single through the risde side scoring Mike Kaminski (Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville).

But the Monarchs would get the lead back in the fourth with four runs and added single runs in the sixth and seven innings to build a 6-3 advantage. Montclair State would threaten in the ninth as Andrew Himmelfarb (Nyack, NY / Nyack) collected a pinch-hit double and then moved to third on a wild pitch. He would score on Kevin Bond's (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) ground out, however that would be as close as the Red Hawks would get.

Senior lefthander Michael Vitale (Bayonne, NJ / Bayonne) took the loss to fall to 0-2. Bionde finished 3-for-5 in the game.

Against North Carolina Wesleyan, MSU could only muster four hits against four Battling Bishop hurlers. North Carolina Weslyan struck for a run in the first and two runs apice in the third and fourth innings to take a 5-0 lead. After adding one in the fifth, North Carolina Wesleyan blew the game wide open with a five-run seventh.

Junior lefty John Masklee (Totowa, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) suffered the loss falling to 0-2.

Montclair continues its trip on Wednesday, March 17 as the Red Hawks take on Averett University in Danville, VA at 2:00 pm.
