Women's Lacrosse Posts Second Shutout
Senior Marykate DiBenedetto (Cinnaminson, NJ / Cinnaminson) collected four goals and five assists as the Red Hawks moved to 6-9 overall this season and 5-1 in the Skyline Conference. Junior Christina Gray (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa) made eight saves for The Sage Colleges, which fell to 1-8 overall, 1-5 in their inaugural season in the Skyline Conference.
Montclair State also secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Tournament with the win coupled with an 18-17 victory by Mt. St. Vincent over Kean. The Red Hawks, the three-time defending champion, can finish no worse than tied with Mt. St. Vincent and for second place however MSU would hold the tiebreaker based on its victories against the Dolphins and Cougars on April 15 and 18, respectively. Montclair will host a semifinal contest in the Skyline Tournament on Wednesday, April 29 against an opponent to be determined.
The Red Hawks dominated from start to finish as they picked up their sixth shutout in program history. MSU outshot the Gators 34-2, including 27-1 in the first half and recorded 34 ground balls in the contest.
Sophomore Kayla Henderson (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury), who finished with three goals, put Montclair on the board 55 seconds into the contest and DiBenedetto netted her first goal 22 seconds later as MSU led 2-0 with 28:43 left. Fallon would scored twice in a 28-second span and DiBenedetto’s unassisted tally with 26:38 to go made the score 5-0. Fallon recorded the hat trick two minutes later and after goals by Morgan MacPhee (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) and DiBenedetto, Montclair State built an eight-goal cushion with 18:18 left before halftime.
Henderson tallied twice more in the first half as did MacPhee and Carla Davis (Decatur, GA / Decatur) as MSU led 14-0 at the break.
DiBenedetto added three draws, seven ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Red Hawks while Lauren Adams (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) had a team-high five draws. Fallon and Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) each had four ground balls.
Gray led the Gators with four ground balls.
Montclair State closes out its regular-season on Saturday, April 25 as the Red Hawks host Ramapo College at Sprague Field in a 1:00 pm contest. The Sage Colleges closes out its season the same day as the Gators face New York Maritime at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning at 1:00 pm.
