Public Health Announcement on Swine Flu – Update 4/29/09

Share/Save/Bookmark

On April 26, American health officials declared a public health emergency over increasing cases of swine flu in the United States. As of 11:00 a.m. on April 29, there have been 91 confirmed cases of swine flu in 10 states in the U.S.

Though there have been no confirmed cases of swine flu in New Jersey, and most specifically not within the Montclair State University community, this announcement is to assure you that the University has a comprehensive emergency plan in place and is fully prepared to take any precautions needed to protect the health of our campus community.

The University Health Center is trained and supplied to screen patients with flu-like symptoms and is working closely with the Emergency Response Team to monitor the status of the swine flu outbreak. The University has taken steps to emphasize the cleaning of bacteria-prone areas such as door handles, hand rails, elevator buttons, and faucets in its daily building cleanings, and provide information to our community on hand and cough hygiene as preventive measures.

Here are some flu prevention tips:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
  • Alcohol-based hands cleaners containing at least 60% alcohol are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

More information about swine flu and protective measures can be found at the University Health Center Web site at www.montclair.edu/health/hc/. Questions can be sent to askanurse@mail.montclair.edu.

We will continue to keep you updated during this health emergency via email and Web postings.
