Scranton, PA (10/14/09) —Senior forward Liz Carugan (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) scored a goal on a breakaway 43 seconds into overtime to lift The University of Scranton to a 2-1 victory over Montclair State University in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
Carugan’s goal was set up by junior forward Liz Mauer (Eagleville, Pa./Archbishop Carroll), who cleared the ball to a wide open Carugan at midfield. Carugan then advanced the ball down the field and found herself in a one-on-one situation against Red Hawk freshman goalie Megan Bosland (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) and blasted a shot from 18 yards out for her fifth goal of the year.
The win was the second straight for Scranton, now 6-7, and breaks a nine-game series losing streak to the Red Hawks, now 8-4 on the year.
Carugan also played a key role in Scranton’s first goal, setting up first-year forward Gretchen Kempf ‘s (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 42nd minute of the second half. Carugan advanced the ball from the left sideline to Kempf, who drilled a shot from 14 yards out that caught the right corner of the cage. Kempf’s shot was also Scranton’s first of the game.
Montclair State dominated the game offensively, building up an 18-4 advantage in shots and a 9-1 margin in penalty corners. The Red Hawks took a 1-0 lead on a heads-up play by senior midfielder Justine DiPaolo (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township), who out-fought a couple of Royal defenders and blasted in a shot from 16 yards out for her fourth goal of the year.
The Red Hawks out-shot Scranton, 10-0, and led 1-0 by intermission, but Royal junior goalie Deirdre Rocklein (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) stopped a number of potential Montclair State scoring opportunities by finishing with seven saves in the first half and 11 for the game. Bosland was credited with a save for Montclair State, which had a two-game winning streak snapped.
The Red Hawks are now off until Tuesday, October 20 when they travel to Kean University to take on the Cougars at 7:30 pm in Union, NJ.
