Volleyball Wins "Play of the Week" Honors from AVCA
Earlier Montclair was selected as the recipient for the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) newly created Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Week.
Montclair State was the winner as it beat out four other candidates from Division I, II and III institutions nationwide. Montclair was the choice in an internet vote on the AVCA website that concluded on Tuesday, October 27. MSU beat out University of Hawai'i, Kennesaw State University, Wingate University and Winthrop University during a week-long voting period.
The plays are chosen based on video highlights submitted by athletic departments around the country.
The winning play occurred during the first set of Montclair’s five-set win over Ramapo College at the Panzer Athletic Center on October 15. With the Red Hawks leading 12-11 and the Roadrunners on serve, the teams traded attack attempts. Libero Meghan Stevens (Woodcliff Lake, NJ / Pascack Hills) made a one-armed dig off the attack. The ball came off low and was then kept alive on a foot save from senior Anna Chesnakova (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick). Sam Karpinski (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) sent the ball back over giving Ramapo another attack chance. This time freshman Jenna Totaro (Secaucus, NJ / Secaucus) dug the ball out on a sliding attempt. Adrianne Moe (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) then set up Karpinski for the kill as MSU went up 13-11 en route to a 28-26 win in the first set.
The play was one of many outstanding efforts from both sides in the match as Montclair led 2-0 before Ramapo battled back to send the match to a deciding fifth set. MSU would win that fifth set 16-14 to clinch a first-round bye in the NJAC Tournament.
