Vallone, Smith Earn NJAC Swimming and Diving Rookie of the Week Honors

Montclair, NJ (11/9/09) – Freshmen Ashley Vallone (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) and Michael Smith (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) were each lauded by the New Jersey Athletic Conference on Monday as the two were named women's and men's Rookie of the Week.

Vallone earns NJAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week honors after helping Montclair State earn its first victory of the season, a 115-64 victory over Division II Adelphi. Individually, she placed first in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events with respective winning times of 26.21 and 57.52. Vallone was also part of the Red Hawks’ first place 200 medley relay (2:00.81).

Smith earns the same honor on the men's side after helping the Red Hawks secure their first victory of the season, a 106.5-86.5 win over Division II Adelphi. He earned a first place finish in the 200 freestyle event with a time of 1:53.89. Smith also captured first place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:18.92.
