Montclair, NJ (11/24/09) – Junior guard Tom Bonard (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) scored
15 points to lead four players in double figures as Montclair State
moved to 3-0 on the year with an 80-39 victory over Berkeley College at
the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.
Junior Rodney Freeney (Piscataway, NJ / Pscataway)
added 12 points off the bench as the Red Hawks led from start to finish
as they shots 52 percent (18-of-34) in the first half and coasted to
their seventh victory over the Bulldogs in as many meetings.
Guard
Jarrel Young (Newark, NJ / Newark Tech) had a game-high 18 points for
Berkeley, which fell to 2-5 on the season with their fourth straight
loss.
Bonard gave
Montclair State an immediate 3-0 lead five seconds into the game as he
drained a three-pointer from the left corner. The Bulldogs would hung
around in the early part getting within 13-8 as Donovan Black
(Morristown, NJ / Morristown) scored on a layup with 14:30 left. But
Montclair would go on a 20-5 run over the next six minutes to pull
away. Ken Dudley (Willingboro, NJ / Burlington Tech) and Freeney each had a basket to make the score 17-8. After Young hit a three-pointer for Berkeley, Ali Mix (East Orange, NJ / East Orange Campus) sank a free throw and Tyrone Prewitt (Trenton, NJ / Trenton) followed with a layup as Montclair led 20-11 with 10 minutes left.
Tyron
Davis (Paterson, NJ / Eastside) got a bucket back for the Bulldogs
however Freeney scored four straight and Bonard buried another three as
MSU led by 15 points. Robert Jackson (Carteret, NJ / Carteret) finished off the run with a layup as the Red Hawks went up 33-13 with 5:22 to play en route to a 44- 24 halftime advantage.
Mix and Sean Young (Scotch Plains, NJ / SP-Fanwood) each had 10 points for MSU, which outrebonded the Bulldogs 54-34. Daniel McRae (Orange, NJ / Newark Tech) added
nine points and eight rebounds while Dudley posted eight rebounds and
eight assists in addition to three points. Jackson had six points and
six rebounds.
Black
had six points and five rebounds for Berkeley, which shots just 26
percent (16-of-62) from the field in the game. Devin Bennett (Paterson,
NJ / Manchester) added four points, seven rebounds and four blocked
shots with Davis collecting five points and five rebounds.
Montclair
State returns to action on Saturday, November 28 as the Red Hawks face
host Allegheny in the Allegheny Tournament in Pennsylvania. Tip off is
scheduled for 8:00 pm. Berkeley is off until December 1 when the
Bulldogs visit Drew University.
