On Monday, November 21st, the LGBT Center hosted it’s first ever Thanksgiving Dinner with the help of student groups S.P.E.C.T.R.U.M.S. and Delta Xi Delta. The event idea was generated because of the fact that a large amount of LGBT students do not have a healthy and supportive family environment. When these students go home for Thanksgiving, it may not feel like “family” at all. Some students do not even have homes to go home to.
The LGBT Thanksgiving Dinner, hosted in Rm. 411 of the SC, allowed the students to come together as a loving family and a community. The event started out by everyone holding hands and giving thanks, initiated by S.P.E.C.T.R.U.M.S. president Catarina Rodrigues. Then, everyone in the room took a turn saying what he/she was individually thankful for.
After giving thanks, everyone was able to enjoy the delicious Thanksgiving feast, ranging from delectable turkey to scrumptious pumpkin pie. While enjoying the festivities, students from the different groups were also encouraged to bond and make new friends.
This year, Thanksgiving was more than just the usual family drama accompanied by a very large head ache. This year, Thanksgiving was memorable and a good time was had by all who participated.
