Baseball Downs Piedmont to Cap Off Georgia Trip

Demorest, GA (3/7/10) – The Montclair State baseball team closed out their weekend series in Georgia on Sunday as the Red Hawks downed host Piedmont College, 10-6 on Sunday.

Junior righthander Evan Coon (Rhinebeck, NY / Red Hook) allowed a run and four hits in five innings of work as Montclair improved to 2-1 on the season. Coon fanned three and walked four as he is now 1-0 on the season.

The Red Hawks fell behind 1-0 after the first, but quickly tied the game in the second as Jason Chesterman (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) and Brooks Miller (Berkeley Heights, NJ / Gov. Livingston) had back-to-back singled with one out. After a second out, Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) doubled in a run as Montclair tied the game at 1-1.

MSU took the lead the next inning as Scott Evangelist (Northfield, NJ / Holy Spirit) and Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) opened the inning with base hits before Adam Bergman (Berkeley Heights, NJ / Gov. Livingston) doubled home Evangelist for a 2-1 Montclair advantage. Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) singled in the second run and Miller’s sacrifice fly gave MSU a 4-1 lead.

Chesterman extended the lead to 5-1 in the fifth with an RBI double and the Red Hawks busted the game open in the eighth with five runs. Sam Politan (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) trotted home on a bases-loaded walk to Evangelist and Mike Ercolano (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) plated a second run with a ground out. Andrew Himmelfarb (Nyack, NY / Nyack) scored on a wild pitch and Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) and Scott Glozzy (Hackettstown, NJ / Warren Hills) each added RBI singles.

Lefthander John Masklee (Totowa, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) pitched two scoreless innings while Daniel Nodarse (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) also threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.

Bionde finished 3-for-4 as the Red Hawks pounded out 17 hits for the second straight game. Himmelfarb, Evangelist, Bond, Boggi and Chesterman had two hits apiece.

Montclair is now off before returning to Georgia on Thursday for the start of a five-game Spring Break trip. The Red Hawks kick things off on Saturday, March 13 as they face Heidelberg College at LaGrange College beginning at 11:00 am.
