Kissimmee, FL (3/18/10) – The Montclair State softball team remained at the .500 mark for the season on Thursday as the Red Hawks split a pair of contest with Hendrix and McDaniel College at the Rebel Spring Games.

Freshman first baseman Kelli O’Brien (Edison, NJ / Edison) drove in three runs while Leslie Gonzalez (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) added two RBI as Montclair topped Hendrix 6-4 before falling to McDaniel 5-2. MSU is now 4-4 on the season following the split.

MSU jumped on top quickly against Hendrix.  In the bottom of the first inning against Hendrix, Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) singled and went to second on a passed ball before scoring on Kelly Nance’s (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro) RBI single. Gonzalez sent one through the middle for a base hit driving home one and O’Brien tacked on two more as she sent a ball back through the box giving the Red Hawks a 4-0 advantage.

Hendrix would cut the gap to 4-2 as it score a run in each of the third and fourth innings. But Montclair countered with a pair of runs in the fifth on an RBI triple Gonzalez and a grounder by O’Brien that sent Gonzalez home as Montclair State led 6-2.

Hendrix scored once in the sixth and again in the seventh to pull within 6-4 in addition to putting the tying runs on base. But freshman Jamie Miller (Spotswood, NJ / St. John Vianney) recorded the final out as Montclair stretched its winning streak to four with the two-run victory.

Senior righthander Elia Persico (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) picked up the victory as she went the first four inning allowing two runs and six hits. She struck out one and walked one. Gonzalez had two of MSU’s six hits in the game.

Against McDaniel, Montclair fell behind 2-0 after the first but got a run back in the third inning as Tori Ferrante (Edison, NJ / JP Stevens) singled to right to drive in Megan Durkin (West Orange, NJ / West Orange).  After another McDaniel run in the fourth, Ferrante again provided the scoring as her grounder allowed Stephanie Szeliga (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) to cross the plate making the score 3-2.

McDaniel would strike twice in the bottom of the fifth for the final margin.

Ferrante (0-1) took the loss for the Red Hawks. Durkin was 2-for-3 for Montclair.

The Red Hawks close out their Rebel Spring Games appearance on Friday, March 19 as they take on Centenary College at 9:00 am. The game will pit former Montclair State standout Kim (Caruso) Broking against her alma mater and head coach Anita Kubicka. MSU then faces Utica College to wrap up the trip at 11:00 am.
