Box Score

Montclair, NJ (9/22/10) – Sophomore forward Michelle Marabondo (Kenvil, NJ / Roxbury) scored with 12:54 remaining in the second half to lift William Paterson to a 1-0 victory over local rival Montclair State in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women’s soccer matchup at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Falduto (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) stopped three shots for her third shutout of the season as the Pioneers won their fifth straight improving to 5-1-2 overall, 2-0 in the NJAC.

Sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Zayac (Jackson, NJ / Jackson) made three saves for the Red Hawks, who dropped their second straight contest. MSU is now 3-4-2 overall, 0-2 in the league.

Marabondo posted eight shots in the contest, but it wasn’t until her seventh that she was able to find the back of the net. With the match scoreless heading into the 78th minute, she picked up a loose ball 40 yards out on the left side and made a run across to the right before unleashing a shot from the top of the box that got past Zayac inside the left post for her fourth goal of the season and the game’s lone score.

William Paterson outshot the Red Hawks 16-6 in the game, including 9-1 in the first half. However the Pioneers could not manage any scoring. Marabondo was stopped by Zayac at 7:17 of the game and the loose ball in front of the goal was kicked away by MSU.

Just over 11 minutes later, Marabondo was denied again on a shot from the right side by Zayac. This time the ball skipped over to the left side where Megan Droelle (Hampton, NJ / North Hunterdon ) picked up the carom and raced in toward the left post. Going one-on-one with Zayac, Droelle’s shot was stopped, keeping the game scoreless.

Montclair State would get one shot off in the first half but Rachel Senyszyn’s (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) shot at 39:27 went high over the crossbar.

In the second half, each team would get opportunities but no shots on goal until Marabondo’s game-winner.  Moments after the goal, Montclair State would get a chance off a free kick. Katie Hazzard (Clementon, NJ/Highland Regional)launched a shot toward the goal that was snared by Falduto.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, September 25 with conference contests. Montclair State is down in Ewing, NJ to face nationally-ranked The College of New Jersey while William Paterson is back home in Wayne to face Richard Stockton. Both games are scheduled for 1:00 pm.
