Montclair, NJ (9/27/10) - Junior quarterback Tom Fischer (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) and senior field hockey defender Jessica Murphy (West Long Branch, NJ / Shore Regional) have been named MSU Athletes of the Week for September 27.
Fischer completed 20-of-26 passes for 199 yards and three first-half touchdowns as No. 16 Montclair State improved to 3-0 with a 42-6 road win at Morrisville State. Fischer got the Red Hawks on the board 2:33 into the contest as he completed a 17-yard TD strike to his brother Vin. He would add a 35-yard strike to extend the lead to 14-0 before tossing his third touchdown pass late in the second half as MSU took a 28-6 halftime lead. Fischer currently leads the NJAC in passing average (197.7 ypg) and is second in both pass efficiency and total offense (178.0 ypg).
Murphy helped the Red Hawks extend their winning streak to six games with a 2-1 overtime road win at No. 11 Trinity (CT). She anchored a MSU defense the helped limit the host Bantams to just 10 shots on goal. She also contributed offensively by tying the game with her second goal of the season, before netting the game-winning score four minutes into the overtime period. Murphy, who was named the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week is part of a MSU defense that currently ranks third in the NJAC in fewest goals allowed (10).
