Box Score

Montclair, NJ (10/16/10) – Senior midfielder Janna Tighe (Sewell, NJ / Gateway Regional) scored her first two goals of the season as 13th-ranked Rowan University remained unbeaten in New Jersey Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 victory over Montclair State at Sprague Field on Saturday evening.

Junior Rachel Dix (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ / Egg Harbor Township) picked up a pair of assists as the Profs won for the third time in their last four outings improving to 10-5 overall, 4-0 in the NJAC.

Senior forward Deana Hagel (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) had the lone goal for Montclair State, which dropped its second straight. The Red Hawks are now 8-5 overall, 1-1 in the conference.

Rowan got on the board at the 16:45 of the contest as Ashley Adams (Erial, NJ / Timber Creek Regional) registered her seventh goal of the season. Dix collected a clearing attempt and pushed the ball over to the right side to Adams who drove to within six yards before firing a shot past MSU keeper Megan Bosland (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) for the 1-0 lead.

The Profs would extend the advantaged just over 10 minutes later. Off a penalty corner, Dix smacked a pass to the left side where Tighe banged in the pass from six yards out as Rowan led 2-0 at the break.

Montclair State would get back into the contest 3:58 into the second period. Hagel put a shot on goal that junior Lisa Apt (Mays Landing, NJ / Oakcrest) stopped. The ball caromed right back in front to Melissa Flaherty (Fishkill, NY / John Jay), who then slid a pass over to left post. Hagel was there with a lunging shot that found the back of the cage as the Red Hawks trimmed the lead to 2-1. It was Hagel’s eighth tally of the season.

Bosland would keep MSU close with four saves in the early portion of the period. Montclair would get a solid chance at 51:24 as Flaherty broke through along the right side and fired a shot from seven yards that Apt made a stick save on. Rowan then came back the other way and extended its lead as Tighe collected her second of the game with Lauren Conner (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ / Egg Harbor Twp.) getting the assist as the Profs led 3-1 with 16:01 to play.

Apt would make that margin stand up as she turned away Montclair’s best chance with 9:50 to go with a blocker glove save on Brittany Carroll’s (Kingston, NY / Rondout Valley) chip shot from within 10 yards.

Apt and Bosland each had six saves in the contest. Rowan outshot Montclair State 11-8 and held a 12-4 advantage in penalty corners as well.

Montclair State is now off until next Saturday, October 23 when the Red Hawks travel to Ewing, NJ to face No. 11 The College of New Jersey at 1:30 pm. Rowan is home on the same day taking on William Paterson in Glassboro beginning at 1:00 pm.
