Men's Basketball Races Past Rowan to Snap Two-Game Skid, 75-56

Glassboro, NJ (1/15/11) – Senior guard Rodney Freeney (Piscataway, NJ / Piscataway) scored a game-high 21 points while junior forward Andrew August (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) added a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds as Montclair State snapped a two-game losing streak with a 75-56 win at Rowan University in an NJAC inter-divisional matchup on Saturday afternoon.

Senior forward Tyrone Prewitt (Trenton, NJ / Trenton) added 15 points and eight rebounds as the Red Hawks (13-4) used an 11-point run in the first half to take the lead and never looked back as they improved to 3-2 in the NJAC North Division with the victory.

Close in the early going, Rowan took an 8-7 lead as freshman guard Jason Rosenberg (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) scored on a layup with 17:45 left. Montclair scored the next 11 points as Prewitt scored on an layup for the lead and August added the next four for a 13-8 advantage with 16:22 remaining. Freeney drained a three-pointer and freshman Michael Price (Plainfield, NJ / Plainfield) put back a miss for the final points in the spurt as the Red Hawks led 18-8 with 11:54 to go before halftime.

The Profs came back with seven straight points to trim the lead to 18-17 however Freeney connected from behind the arc and layups by Price and Agusut in addition to a foul shot by Sean Young (Scotch Plains, NJ / SP-Fanwood) boosted the Montclair lead back to 26-17.

Montclair led 37-25 at the break as the Red Hawks shots 59 percent (14-of-24) from th field over the first 20 minutes.

MSU would maintain its double-digit lead throughout the second half and tooke its biggest advantage at 69-45 with under five minutes remaining as senior Tom Bonard (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) hit two free throws.

Young finished with nine points and five rebounds off the bench for Montclair State, which shot 58 percent (29-of-50) from the field for the game.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, January 19 as they host Rutgers-Newark at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 6:00 pm.
