Madison, NJ (2/26/11) - Junior Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) scored three times while sophomore goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury)
made 14 saves, however the Montclair State women's lacrosse team fell
to Drew University in the season-opener of both teams on Saturday.
Drew (1-0) never trailed and scored the game's first two goals. Aileen Musynske (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) score the season first goal with one of two scores on the day just 3:19 into the game. Brown then got in on the action eight minutes later with her first of the game to make the score 2-0.
Montclair State (0-1), the defending Skyline Conference Champions, got on the board at the 15:44 mark with a goal from freshman Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls). It would be the Red Hawks first of two goals in the half while the Rangers would add three more scores to take a 5-2 lead into the half. Delfini accounted for the other MSU score as she put in a feed from senior Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury).
The Rangers would blow the game wide open in the second half by scoring nine of the next 10 goals, holding a 13-3 advantage with 11:48 to play. Stacie Brown (Upper Marlboro, MD / The Calverton School) had a goal and both of her assists in the second frame. Becca Schild (Princeton, N.J./Princeton), Lyndsay Rossi (Pennington, N.J./Pennington School) and Cara Jeffries (Central Square, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) each had two goals in the win.
MSU scored the final three goals, including the first
collegiate tally for freshman Krissa Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury)
with 7:58 remaining.
Drew scored four of their 13 goals off free position opportunities while Montclair St. was 2-of-7. Senior Rachel Hanley (Randolph, N.J/Randolph) registered her 22nd career victory. She made 13 saves to help the Rangers defeat Montclair for the third time in four seasons.
Kayla Henderson had three draws and two ground balls for MSU while defenders Sara Watson (Medford Lakes, NJ / Shawnee) and Kristin Quigley (Mount Laurel, NJ / Lenape) each forced two turnovers.
Sloane Coles (The Plains, Va./Foxcroft) was a force in the Ranger midfield, scooping up four ground balls and winning six draw controls for the Rangers.
Montclair State returns to action next Saturday, March 5 as the Red Hawks host No. 10 Stevens in their home opener at Sprague Field. It will be a rematch of last year's first-round NCAA contest won by the Ducks, 15-12.
